February Note from Sabbatical

Hi everyone, greetings from mid-February on sabbatical in Thailand (more on that below):

My extended break began full-force and radical after the farewell show in November as my wife, Alicia, and I packed up our belongings and squeezed them in a 10x10 box. This was equal parts painful and liberating. We felt burdened by day to day upkeep of a modern American home, but in love with the same burden. The contents of our little mountain cabin fit so well that we kept more than we expected. Lotsa flotsam and jetsam - a couch, a desk, dining table and chairs, houseplants, our beloved mountain truck 'The Mule' - we gave away, loaned out, stashed and stored with friends and family. We were ready to look for a larger home anyway, but our son was the most sad to leave. Hopefully the worst that can happen to him, other than expensive therapy bills, is a tendency to feel rootless and inclined to travel... just like his mom and pop! (oh boy...)

We boiled everything down to a backpack each by January. When I say we're taking a sabbatical from everything, we mean EVERYTHING. Several people in my life have expressed drooling envy at this, but I have a confession: I'M A HOMEBODY!! I love: 1. a fridge with my food in it, and 2. a bed with my sheets on it, somewhere out there, knowing I can return to it. I think I got myself into deeper water than I was expecting, but lesson learned. All the more likely that you'll hear me back doing music sooner.

On that note (pun relished), I can feel the music rising in me again, like sap. Perhaps wiser musicians anticipate the need for creative rebirthing periodically, but I came to this the old fasioned way - burnout. On this trip I have brought my mandolin (very well insured!). I pick it up when the muse strikes me, utterly without pressure or need driving me. I've been finding new nooks and crannies. Just last night Alicia asked "Did you write that? That was beautiful," after one of dozens of little, aimless meanderings around the fretboard that stay with me day after day. Perhaps one or two will grow into 'Gone Away Pt.2' or something fun. Right now I'm sensitive to the wind whispering in my heart, listening for the way forward from here, just as I've always done.

By the way, I've been listening to the new disks, IN PICTURES and PLAY IN THE YARD all the time, have you? These songs are my own messages in a bottle from the deep inside to the light of day. When I finally decided on sabbatical I had to come to terms with not being able to release and tour a new disk as I'd been hoping to do. Thankfully, this and my limited time available set just the boundaries I needed to know what to do, and just like with ANGELS AND DEVILS ALIKE, the results have exceeded my expectations. Some of these songs I've played out once or twice, some only for friends, some, like my new favorite "Summerbird", have never been heard. On IN PICTURES Tom Frisch and I captured them in all their glory, the best I ever played them, and still managed to find new sounds and new instruments. PLAY IN THE YARD, meanwhile, makes me smile everytime. Playing with Jim, Tyler and Andy behind me was like heaven to a normally solo performer. Like, dude, imagine - Tyler was there holding down JUST THE BASS NOTES!!!! Unbelieveable. I could go on and on and on and on, but my wife has taught me better manners. Get the disks and hear for yourself.

Have I mentioned I hadn't enjoyed a real vacation in, like, what feels like a decade? Guess where we have gone now! (OK tons of you know already, but, ta da) I'm in Bangkok, Thailand right now, feeling grateful that U.S. cities have good sanitation, and grateful that Thai food is so amazingly good. Its been great to be warm in the winter, to be well cared for at all of our stays, to get in my first ever tropical island beach time, and to have a change to decompress and take a long look at life. What do I want in the future? What did I like about what I doing? Is this really the life I sought? What of all these answers is something permanent and lasting, and which were just circumstantial, satisfactions that might be found in greater measure in a different presentation. Is music the highest expression of the joy I feel bubbling up inside me? What new risks might I be inclined to take in the future? What do I really need, and what do I really NOT need to be happy!?

The answers are coming. They change shape a little everyday. Geographically speaking we're going on to India next - a place Alicia has always wanted to go and who's modal music has thrilled me since George Harrison. Its time for more new things. What new things are you getting into these days? Do you still feel the 'Recession', or are you ready to think of it as 'The Progression' to something better and closer to your heart. Have you been working at your dreams lately? I'd love to hear about it. Drop me a note here thru link@lincolncrockett.com or sign in on the guestbook. Meanwhile, enjoy the music, and as I told a friend recently, may all the happiness you can stand be stalking you in broad daylight.

Peace and be well,
Lincoln

ANNOUNCING TWO NEW ALBUMS!!

www.cdbaby.com/cd/lincolncrockett3

www.cdbaby.com/cd/lincolncrockett1

Hi Everyone!

I am pleased to announce the release of not one but TWO full-length collections of music: IN PICTURES and PLAY IN THE YARD. As I embarque on my sabbatical, these albums are my way of saying thank you to all of you who have supported me on this adventure these past few years, seeing shows, buying disks and letting me know how the music has touched you. You've been asking for more and I couldn't leave you hanging! These albums are digital download only, and are available right now through www.CDBaby.com.

IN PICTURES is a stripped-down, solo trip through live favorites recorded for the first time like 'Takin' A Break' and 'Why Do We Hurt The Ones We Love', alongside rarities like 'Sight Of Love' and 'Ya Gotta Know', and favorite new songs that have never been heard before like 'Summerbird' and 'Hard Heart'. Like ANGELS & DEVILS ALIKE before it, its meant to be heard tip to tail, but you'll love your favorites on their own. Find it and more about it at www.cdbaby.com/cd/lincolncrockett3

PLAY IN THE YARD features my musical brothers Jim McKeon on guitar, Tyler Smith on bass and Andy Love on drums, captured together at a weekend cabin retreat. Kicked off by a duo version of 'Glory Halelujah', we streched out and rocked out new songs like 'Mississippi Moonrise', solo favorites like 'Psychopaths', older songs like 'Dog', and even the Cross-eyed Rosie song 'Moonbeams & Kerosene'. I love these recordings. Find it and more about it at www.cdbaby.com/cd/lincolncrockett1

This week my family and I are hopping a jet one-way to Thailand, and if you're lucky I'll get bored of beaches quickly and turn to Facebook and video blogging hundreds of new songs. But in my heart my #1 goal is to de-stress and spend time getting to know my wife and son again, so for now, enjoy these new disks as my personal messages to you, and we'll see each other ahead on greener shores.

Thanks Everyone!

With love and gratitude,

Lincoln

Hi Everyone!

I'm fresh back from the Sister's Folk Festival and I can do nothing but gush. For those who have never been, it's an epicenter of beautiful music, and follows on the heals of the Americana Project Song Accademy, where I was honored to be a staff member. (www.sistersfolkfestival.com) Great to see so many friends there, and hope the rest of you will join in in the future!

The *NEW* CD Baby is here: THE best source for indedpendant music has launched a new artist info site with a robust resources section, new product offerings, AND a brand new storefront with new functions and features! New ease of downloads & updated info will be coming for my and Cross-eyed Rosie's cd's. I'll be taking one more run through Washington with Chris Kokesh and playing a few more dates in the Portland area culminating with an EXTRA SPECIAL SHOW at Mississippi Studios on November 27th!! More details on that show in the future...

THIS WEEK: John Henry and Chris Kokesh have invited me to be the special guest at their Harmony Thursdays series at Alberta St. Pub in Portland!
