Cycle Oregon Friday - July 11, 2013

Hey Old Friend,

This break from performing I'm on has become like a warm blanket.  I will be throwing off the covers now and then (see dates at bottom), like tomorrow night I've been invited to play at the Cycle Oregon weekend ride in Corvallis, OR.

Back in the early '00's I worked for Pizzicato in Portland, OR and served up some pies to riders camped by Wallowa Lake.  Now I get to go back and play music instead!

The best way to sum up Cycle Oregon is through what riders call it: The Best Bike Ride in America.  The annual event is a two-wheeled tent revival features 2,000 riders rolling through Oregon's beautiful backwoods by day, and camping out while being served great food and being serenaded by great music.  If you like to ride your bike and like a party, then yeah, you'll like this too.  Check it out.

-------------------------------other news--------------------------------

I'm continuing to grow my healing practice, teach music to musicians of all levels in the Gorge, and be with family.  Really, that's about it!

In the meantime, I'm letting the player roll at the website, you can enjoy my clips and performances on YouTubeiTunes never runs out of virtual stock, and cd's are still available through the great folks at CD Baby.  I've also had some fun recording cool stock music clips with Tom Frisch you can hear at Pond5 under the name BlueGenes.

KZME Podcast Links! Get Hip to Mo Phillips! - April 10, 2013

That title could also read 'KZME Podcasts Link'!

The podcast is now available of my March 30th interview and live performance on KZME's "Hello Cruel World".  Get it on iTunes and KZME's website.  Link to both Here:

http://podcast.kzme.fm/johnbjones/?p=episode&name=2013-04-10_hcw_with_lincoln_crockett.mp3

In it I get to share with you where the song Psychopaths came from, and what makes recording albums like Angels & Devils Alike unlike any other.

We also had a fun conversations about energy work, songwriting, psychotherapy and I capped it of with a new song for you on Ukelele, "I Love You (Thank You)".

"Hello Cruel World" is a great eye into songwriters and musicians. Check out previous podcasts with other Portland area musicians and compatriots like Matt Meighan, Mike Midlo, Brad Creel, Stephanie Schneiderman and many more!

--------------------------------------------------------------------

I want you to get hip to Mo Phillips!  Mo does 'kids music' that adults love, too, like a full-sized, indie Muppet.

I made guest appearances on Mo's past two albums, Robot Rodeo and his newest, Monster Suit.  You should especially check out a sweet duet on Monster Suit I sang with Portland's Little Sue called "The Princess & The Cowboy".  Play it for your kids and yourself every day!

I'll be joining Mo for two special shows in Portland this Saturday!

This Saturday Appearance on "Hello Cruel World"! - March 26, 2013

Hi Everyone,

I'm on a semi-hiatus from shows right now, but this Saturday is a chance for me to play for you live no matter where we all are: "Hello Cruel World" is an acoustic music show featuring conversations and in-studio performances from singer/songwriters local & national.

The show is this Saturday, March 30th, from 4 - 6 pm, the guest appearance will be in the second hour.  Tune-in in the Portland Metro at 107.1 FM, or join us from anywhere on earth online at www.kzme.fm.

We'll have a chance to hang out, I'll catch you up on what I've been up to, and maybe host John B. Jones and I will get into a philosophical discussion about the show's title.  He dropped me a note after playing my song "Psychopaths" a few times, and Matt Meighan was a recent guest on his show.

I'm also using it as a chance to pick a little with Jim McKeon.  Jim and his new guitar will be joining me sometime later in my set.

It will also be a Podcast!  If you can't listen live, go to iTunes and search "KZME Hello Cruel World".

If you can't listen live, but still want that genuine radio experience, the program will be rebroadcast Tuesday 4/2 from 10-noon.  I'll let you know when the Podcast is available after that!

And I promise, no matter how much it scares me, I'll play you at least one of the yet-unrecorded songs that have been gestating around me over the past year or two.

Live or via Podcast, I hope you'll join us.

Give a Lincoln Crockett disk this year! - December 8, 2012

Hi Friends,

Happy Holidays and Happy end-of-2012.

I've got to confess, I'm one of those people who loves Christmas, stockings, caroling and the whole bit.  Every year growing up we piled into a car a drove all day to cram into my aunt & uncle's house for a huge family gathering.  As an adult I miss those gatherings, but the warm feeling persists.

I also get a kick out of very non-hippie-type-folks putting enormous glowing signs in their yards that say "Love" and "Peace".  Maybe there's hope and we're not so different after all.

Every now and then I still get an email or Facebook message from someone who was really effected by one of my songs, especially from my album Angels & Devils Alike.  More than a few of them find these songs carried them through hard times in their lives, the same way they lifted me when I wrote them down.

Some of these songs were born as much as 8 years ago, but thanks to my low-profile, independent music career, many people are still just discovering them.  Others have come to cherish them more and more over time.

If you're looking for something special to throw into a loved-one's stocking, a piece of great music to give to a music-lover, or something meaningful to share with someone who might need it this year, please consider giving a Lincoln Crockett CD.  Right now at  CD Baby you can order actual physical copies and still have them by Christmas.

Who knows, right about now you just might need to put one on.

-------------------------------other news--------------------------------

Here in Trout Lake I'm on a break, taking time to grow my healing practice, teach music to my great private students, and be with family.

It also seems the muse has me writing more songs, which if things go well I'll share with you in 2013.  I've already recorded some fun stock music with Tom Frisch you can hear at Pond5

Meanwhile, you can see clips and performances on YouTubeiTunes never runs out of virtual stock, and I'll always let the player roll at lincolncrockett.com.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------

I appreciate your support and I'm grateful for every chance I get to share music with you.

Take good care and enjoy the season.

Peace House Concert with Chris Kokesh, LJ Booth & Richey Bellinger! - November 9, 2012

Hi Neighbors,

So, uh, I find myself inarticulate.  Unabashedly unverbose.

Uh, wow.  I could not gush about Saturday the 17th in Portland enough.  If you don't already know all of these musicians (and are therefore probably giddy to see this gathering), then there's so much to tell you.  You must go to their websites and work up a good lather.

These songwriters in the round is something special.  Chris Kokesh is a longtime friend and collaborator, LJ Booth is one of the best songwriters I have ever met and a national talent, and Richey Bellinger is a potter and one of my favorite songwriters in Portland.

The Peace House is one of those precious, wonderful places that I can't believe exists, and yet does.  To have this performance in this house in such a setting, well, I don't know what music is really about, but I know its about this for sure.

Join Us.

In my upcoming visit to Portland for 11/17's show I will be popping my head in at the Grant House in Vancouver AND returning to one of my first-ever gigs in Portland:  Playing in an Umpqua Bank lobby.  Yes, cynics, music lives everywhere, even, and perhaps especially in bank lobbies.

Come join me anywhere, at anytime.

Up here in Trout Lake, Ma Nature has been dancing around the thermostat with warm morning rain just as likely as a hard frost.  The leaves have turned and mostly fallen, but fall is not through yet, and a wonderful breath of fresh, almost-vanilla forest mulch wafts all about.   That and cow manure.  But somehow that's why we love it here.

C U out there soon!

Secret Society with Marv & Rindy Ross, Thursday!! + News, news, news - October 8, 2012

Hi Neighbors Far & Wide,

The country life has me happily busy (more news on that below), so every chance I get to come out and play has been something special.

This Thursday is perhaps cream of the crop:

As Quarterflash, Marv and Rindy Ross built one of the most successful bands to ever come out of Portland, touring with the likes of Elton John, stacking up platinum records and a major studio film soundtrack (“Nightshift”).

This Thursday, The Rosses will play a rare, intimate acoustic concert with some very talented friends from Quarterflash and their other recent popular creation, The Trail Band, “sitting in”.

Marv & Rindy will be taking on swing, country, folk, rock, and Americana with high energy and humor, distilling the fun and intensity of their 17 CDs and thirty years of creating music together into a powerful original acoustic set.

I’m honored, tickled, happy and excited to be invited to kick off this special night.

The Secret Society is comfy and luscious. Seating is limited, so get your tickets right now!

Man of Learned Letters:

Just like kindergarten, sing it with me now, "C, D , E, F, G, A, B".  Wha?  If that doesn't look right, that's 'cause its all the white keys on the piano.

That's right, I'm offering Music Lessons to musicians of all ages and levels in my home office in Trout Lake, WA and via Skype.  I so enjoyed opening musical doors for my students these past two years in Portland.  I love music and I love to share.

Mandolin, guitar, bass, drums, singing, songwriting and performing are all on the table.  So far a number of my neighbors stop by every week, and one intrepid Portlander makes the drive once a month!

Drop me a note if you're interested too!

"Smoke gets in your eyes...":

Some of you may recall that the last time I moved to Trout Lake Mt. Adams caught fire.  We got back here in August and by September the mountain was on fire again.  I've promised the neighbors we're never leaving again!

Thanks for everyone who sent a note or an email of concern.  With two other areas burning in the near-region as well, Fire crews have done extraordinary work keeping threatened lands safe.  I now have an eye for helicopters, and I've learned to say "There's a tender drafting up the road" [ie, there's a water truck pulling water from the stream up the road].

And you know how photos and pictures look so warm with a yellow/blue-blocker filter on them?  Ours look like that all day long!

Guess who stopped by the other day?:

Fans of my bluegrassy side and my work with Nicolas Miranda be glad to know that we just completed a couple-day songwriting binge.  The acoustic guitar wizard drove the 2.5 hrs from Hermiston to Trout Lake early last week to break ground on new material - new fiddle tunes, new arrangements and new songs - for a new album project!

The creative sparks were definitley flying, and so far the results have exceeded our expectations.  Now I'm working hard to get three new variations on a familiar fiddle tune up to flying speed!

If all goes well this will be a large part of my 2013, and will hopefully include travel to areas I haven't been to in a while.  I'll keep you posted as things progress.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------

Thanks to those of you who came out at last-minute notice when I was invited to play the finale RUINS Tuesday party at Springhouse Cellar in Hood River, OR.   Jackstraw headlined!  Man, what a scene!  Hopefully they'll start up again next year, they're worth the trip.

All the best 'til I see you next.

Happy Fall,
Lincoln

LINKLIST: This Saturday!! Nathaniel, Jeff & Lincoln!! and heaps more... - August 30, 2012

Hi Everyone,

I feel very lucky at this at this stage in my modest career.

I get to play about as often as I want to right now, and only shows I'm genuinely excited about.  Over the past year I've shared bills with the likes of Beth Wood, Leela Grace, Halelupe and so many more, and each one has been a special evening.

This Saturday at Mississippi Pizza in Portland will be the exact same miracle all over again, I can feel it in my bones.

Nathaniel Talbot opened my first cd release show in 2007, I simply adore what he does.  He now lives on an island as a full-time farmer and makes it back occassionally to blow people's minds with his extraordinary Travis picking guitar and delicate chamber pop folk.

I first heard Jeffrey Martin at 2011's Sister's Folk Festival Americana Songwriter Accademy and was blown away by his soulfulness.  But even before that I took one look at him and had a gut feeling, like, 'woa, lookout, this guy goes deep.'  We've been wanting to do something together for a long time.

Needless to say, its a mutual love fest.  We'll begin with three short solo sets and then play in the round for the rest of the evening, chiming in and jamming together on several songs.  I'm glad every time Nathaniel makes it back to town, and I know you will be to.

Next weekend, Friday, September 7 through Sunday, September 9, I'm honored to be MC'ing at the illustrious and illuminating Sisters Folks Festival!  Set in beautiful Sisters, OR, the weekend is an unparalleled celebration of American Roots Music.

I'll be at the magical and ultra-cozy Angeline's Bakery stage.   You owe yourself a trip to this festival before you die, its wonderful.

For those of you keeping up with me on Facebook, you'll see that I'm safely moved back up to Trout Lake, WA.  I'm starting off up here playing with my neighbor, guitarist Jeff Nelson, at the Trout Lake CSA Farm Benefit Dinner on September 15.

Proceeds support the Farm 2 School program, getting fresh, locally grown food into the Trout Lake School.  More details on the calendar page.  Is this your chance for an end-of-summer road-trip?

Araki/Claire/Crockett/Miranda 7/28! & Much More! - July 13, 2012

Hi Everyone,

How is your summer going?  Those of you who've been keeping up with me on Facebook know mine has definitely got my number!

So when life handed me lemons, I've made carrot juice with the music dangling ahead of me.  I'm joining a wild campout and concert with Brad Creel and The Reel Deel Saturday, an open mic with Alexa Wiley and Garett Brennan and more this Sunday, and playing and end-of-summer bluegrass hurrah with Bloom Out Inside at the Division/Clinton St Fair in a couple weeks.  You'll find details below for all of these below.

If there's just one you come join me for, however, make it this:

Saturday, July 28th is nothing short of a dream bill I've had in mind for a long time - Hanz Araki & Kathryn Claire, and Lincoln Crockett & Nicolas Miranda at Mississippi Pizza Pub in Portland.

Irish flute player Hanz Araki is the quintessential world music musician.  Best known for his playing and singing of Celtic music, Hanz (short for Hanzaburo) is the world’s only sixth generation shakuhachi player, the traditional bamboo "Zen flute" of Japan.  He has performed around the world with the Juno Award-winning Paperboys, Casey Neill and an all-star tribute to The Pogues called K.M.R.I.A. alongside members of The Decemberists and REM. He has played with the Seattle Symphony and is featured on more than a dozen recordings and soundtracks, from feature films and documentaries to popular video games.

Kathryn Claire has asserted herself in a new generation of traditionally-inspired musicians. As a violinist, singer, and songwriter she has cultivated a style that is technically graceful and moves seamlessly across genres.  She has collaborated with many Portland stalwarts including KMRIA, The Portland Cello Project, Chris Kokesh & more. The Eugene Weekly says the songs on Kathryn's new album, Morning Comes Too Soon, “leave you with goosebumps.”

Together Hanz & Kathryn have toured extensively throughout the US, Canada, and Japan and have released an ambitious series of themed Celtic music albums.

I've said enough in these emails about acoustic guitarist Nicolas Miranda to fill several press releases.  He's wonderful.  Together, he and I create a bluegrazzy modern folk, passing his guitar and my mandolin between us.  Its fun and dynamic, its off the rails, it dances and flies.  We truly play.

Expect some inter-duo collaborating too!

LINKLIST: Electric Gurus at the White Eagle Friday!! - June 20, 2012

Hi Everyone,

Without making a big deal about it, I want to hip you to what's so cool about this Friday's show in Portland:

On my website I talk about how each of the bandleaders is some kind of guru in their own right.  They are - you should check them each out, and the show is going to be a good one - but that's not the point.

What's really happening is its the last time for a while I'll rock out with three of my favorite musicians: Jim, Tyler & Andy.  I'm moving back up to Trout Lake, WA in August, and while a lot of things won't change, a few will.  I'm going to let go what has become Crazy Horse to my Neil Young, the sonic place I go to let go, to get electrically loud and roudy, to surrender to sound itself.  But not just yet.

The evening kicks off with Halelupe and her brother Nick Weitzer at 9:30 with a set of her intricate and groovy spiritfolkpop.  'Lupe and I had a great time at last month's Sunday show at Mississippi Pizza and I'm looking fwd to more.

Next the Michelle Kopper Band takes the stage for a full set of music featuring Michelle's long-time friend and collaborator Craig Stewart from the online radio show "Between The Notes" on guitar and newest collaborator Mont Chris Hubbard local songwriter/composer on keyboard. Welcoming Will & Fletcher on Bass & Drums respectively...serving up a fresh interpretation of some of her favorites in that soul-searching-meets-humor-meets-determination=JOY... way that she does.

Finally, the band from my electric album "Play In The Yard" - Jim McKeon on guitar, Tyler Smith on bass, Andrew Love on drums.  We sometimes called them 'SPB', and they formed the core of my 6-piece crew 'Enemies'.  We've spent the past 5 years together revisioning most songs I've ever written.  I've learned more about what it means to really play music from these guys than anywhere else.  These are my gurus.  Let's see if I've learned anything.

May's full of Love starting Sunday! Halélupé!! - May 3, 2012

Hi Everyone,

Music in the merry month of May is all about Love Love Love. Hallelujah! No, seriously, its a bizarre theme that keeps popping up. Read on:

The "All Ages n' Early" show we did back in April was a treat for everyone, and I've been looking for a chance to do another ever since. And here is is: this Sunday, May 6th singer, songwriter, guitarist & healer Halélupé and I are getting together for an easy-going, Sunday music hangout in Portland at Mississippi Pizza.

Got kids and don't want to have to leave 'em at home? Bring 'em here and they can eat pizza. Love the music but don't want to have a late night? We want to see you at Mississippi Pizza on Sunday!

Here's where the love part comes in: Halélupé's latest album, The Heart of Things (see?), is a journey to the quiet places of the heart (there it is again!) that also rocks. It was produced by leading Portland producer Rob Stroup of 8-Ball Studios and has received radio play around the West including Portland (KINK), San Francisco (KFOG) and New Mexico (KBAC & KTAO). Lupé, as I call her, captivates listeners with engaging melodies, hooks, and grooves. She has garnered acclaim as a finalist for the 2008 Portland Songwriters Association Performing Artist of the Year, and a 2009 West Coast Songwriters contest “Judges Pick”. Her loyal following and I enjoy her authenticity, remarkable songs and ability to touch us deeply.

March Music Magic - Leela Grace, Will West and More! - March 1, 2012

Hi My Angels & Devils,

There's something for everyone in March's busy music calendar:

For everyone who's been asking for an earlier show. I hear you! This Sunday, March 4 singer, songwriter, banjo player, guitarist & clogger Leela Grace and I are getting together for an easy-going, Sunday music hang out.

Got kids and don't want to have to leave 'em at home? Bring 'em here and they can eat pizza. Love the music but don't want to have a late night, we want to see you at Mississippi Pizza on Sunday!

Leela is a Columbia, Missouri native who transplanted to Portland in 2007, and has quickly become a sought-after performer and banjo, singing, and clogging teacher in the area.  She has performed nationally for over 25 years, developing her own unique clawhammer banjo style, marked by clear melodies and powerful, driving rhythm. Leela’s “soaring” vocals, compelling modern original songs, sterling credentials in old-time music, and disarming stage presence have earned her critical and audience praise for the “great depth and insight” of her original songs. Her music has been featured on NPR’s All Songs Considered and chosen for inclusion on a “Best of Portland Acoustic Music” compilation CD.

Then on Thursday, March 15 I'm takin' it in the other direction with a late-night club hangout at the Goodfoot in Portland with Lincoln Crockett & Enemies and Will West & The Friendly Strangers.

Carolina-born Will West's up-temp folk and roots music is the perfect thing to see at the Goodfoot, itself a funky, upbeat, fun place to hang out that I've been coming to to dance the night away ever since arriving in Portland more than a decade ago. Will was up for awards at this year's Portland Music Awards and is band The Friendly Strangers, reads like a who's who of Portland Americana musicians.

My Enemies are still rosie from last month's successful benefit concert, so come get your weekend started off with a bang, on a Thursday! Enemies is up first and both bands will play long, wide open sets until the wee hours.  Lets have some fun.

For St. Patrick's day I'll be playing Celtified-Bluegrass, or is it Grassified-Celtic?  American Bluegrass and Old Time musics draw from Celtic roots, AND here's a little known fact: early in my performing career I often sat in with Maggie's Fury, a wild and woolly Celtic rock band out of Bellingham, WA.  So there's a caleigh in me yet.  Slainte Mhath!

Thank you to everyone who made February's Josephoenix Memorial Benefit Concert for Grief Watch & The Dougy Center such a successful, memorable, and meaningful evening.  I am deeply grateful.

We reached all of our goals of giving and were able to raise awareness through our story that there is reason to hope even in - and perhaps especially in - the deepest grief.  Thank you, all, and hope to see you again soon.

Grief Watch & Dougy Center Benefit Concert Sat Feb 18 - February 10, 2012

Hi Everyone,

The Grief Watch and Dougy Center benefit concert in Portland on Feb 18th fast approaches.  We have been blessed by upcoming coverage in the Oregonian next Monday, Willamette Week on Wednesday, and an interview on KINK radio, as well as donations of time, money and services from a number of Portlanders and Northwest businesses.  If you plan to attend I highly recommend going to Brown Paper Tickets now and pre-purchasing before everyonefinds out.

Visit www.griefwatch.com and www.dougy.org to find out what you'll be supporting.  Both groups are filled with information, knowledge and experience on how to grieve, heal, and live after the kinds of losses and tragedies people fear most.

Chris Kokesh and I are coming up with a setlist, I'm charting out some new material for Enemies and heading to rehearsal tonight.  If music is healing-tainment, the 18th will be a sterling example.  We hope you'll join us.

Chris Kokesh to open The Josephoenix Memorial Benefit Concert Feb 18!! - January 18, 2012

Hi Friends and Neighbors,

Tickets for the Josephoenix Memorial Benefit Concert for Grief Watch & The Dougy Center on February 18th are now on sale at Brown Paper Tickets: http://www.brownpapertickets.com/event/219801

Proceeds from the show go directly to support the work of Grief Watch and The Dougy Center.  Both organizations are priceless resources for people and families dealing with grief and loss.  Most of us already have - and all of us will - lose loved ones.  The impact of supportive groups like these cannot be understated.

I'm pleased to announce that Chris Kokesh will be the special guest opener for the evening's concert.  Any of you who have heard her song "Lucy" - seen here on YouTube - know that she has the right heart for the job.  Many of you have come to know and love this talented songwriter, fiddler, singer and guitarist with me over these past few years.  I'm delighted to have her there and will join her as part of the opening set as well.

Lincoln Crockett & Enemies will headline the event - this is music the way I hear and feel it: acoustic, electric, jazz, bluegrass, dynamic, virtuosic, improvised and limitless.  Enemies features my most frequent collaborators of the past few years - Jim McKeon on guitar, Peter Schwimmer on banjo & mandolin, Tyler Smith on bass, Andy Love on drums, and introducing Jeff Baxter on keys.  (Who knows, Chris might even add some harmony & fiddle, she's been known to do that sort of thing.)

This event is very close to our hearts musically and as a benefit show, but it is also a memorial for the one year anniversary of the birth and death of our son Joseph Phoenix. We have 300 tickets to sell and we want to sell them all. We hope to see you there and if you wouldn’t mind passing this email and word on to others in your community it would be greatly appreciated.

January with Beth Wood + February Benefit Concert! - December 21, 2011

Hi Friends and Neighbors,

Season's Greetings!  I must have been a good boy this year, 'cause for Christmas this year I'm getting 2012.  Here, share some:

In January I'm genuinely excited to be playing the Lighthouse Concert Series with the incomparable Beth Wood.  Beth is an award-winning, Eugene-based songwriter who has been featured on OPB's Oregon ArtBeat and a friend I've come to know and love from Sisters Songcamp.  She just lights up the stage with her 100 watt, barefoot self.

We'll each be doing solo sets, and joining each other on a number or two.  This wonderful houseconcert series outside of Portland is going to be a great way to start off the year.  Hope you'll come join us for a special evening:

2012 has a special place in my heart: in February, the first Josephoenix Memorial Concertwill raise awareness for and support the work of Grief Watch and The Dougy Center.  Both organizations are priceless resources for people and families dealing with grief and loss.

When my family and I suffered the loss of our baby boy on Valentine's Day 2011 we were buoyed by the presence these Portland-based, national-caliber non-profits.  Grief is a natural part of all life and change, yet few people know about how well it can be handled, no matter how large or small.  I encourage you to visit their websites: www.griefwatch.com andwww.dougy.org.

We hope you'll come join us for a night of great music.  I've pulled together a dynamic set featuring my solo work and a genre-bending dream band of mine, Lincoln Crockett & Enemies.

I'll let you know when ticket presales begin in January.  We plan to add an opening performer as well.  Let us know if you would like to volunteer or contribute in some way.  Thank you ahead of time for being a part of it:

Here's the secret: To really catch the unexpected magic that happens when we plug in --> come see us IN PORTLAND AND UP IN TROUT LAKE!!!

Meet Dan Eichler! - October 1, 2011

I'm proud and excited to announce that I've partnered up with Dan Eichler - formerly music booker for Borders Books and currently booker for Mississippi Pizza in Portland, OR - to take over my day-to-day booking and promotion workload.  Dan is a facile connecting to people as I am putting together chords.

Dan making it possible not only for me to devote more time to my family and healing practice, but he shares my vision for my career - regional, rooted, sustainable, enjoyable, remarkable - AND it just so happens is first cousin's with one of my oldest friends west of the Mississippi River.  What more can I ask for?

Thanks and welcome to the team, Dan!!

Special Friday show at Birdfest & Bluegrass 10/7! - September 30, 2011

It's October (wow, really?) and that means its time for the one-of-a-kind Birdfest & Bluegrass Festival  Over the past several years I've had the pleasure of playing as part of the fest with Cross-eyed Rosie, The Josh Cole Band, and Chris Kokesh (twice) but this year is different.

The organizers invited me to be the featured artist at a special show at the Old Liberty Theater on Friday, October 7th.  At 7 pm I'll kick it off with a solo/duo set trading off guitar and mandolin duties with guest picker Nicolas Miranda.  For the second set we'll be joined by fellow Cross-eyed Rosie alum Jason Mellow on bass and Peter Schwimmer on banjo.

I first pulled together these three of Portland's finest bluegrass pickers in December 2010 and formed the project sometimes referred to as Bloom Out Inside.  Go ahead, say it: "Blue Mountainside", yeah, like that.  We call it 'Indie Chamber Bluegrass' and it is a whole ton of talent and real musical fun.

Get your tickets now at the Old Liberty Theater Box Office, (360) 887-7260.

Lincoln Crockett & Chris Kokesh Friday!! & More... - August 30, 2011

Hi Everyone,

It feels like its been SO long since I've played for most of you!  And I guess it's true, it's been a good summer here in Portland, and I've been doing more work musically behind the scenes than onstage.  So let's make each opportunity count.

Chris Kokesh and I have played dozens of shows together over the past several years.  She is hands-down one of the finest professional performing songwriters in the region, a fine fiddler, and in my opinion something of a Portland treasure.  Am I over-selling?  I'm excited for this Friday!

We don't get to play together as often these days so it's really a special occasion when we reunite.  While I've been growing my practice and playing with Bloom Out Inside & SPB, Chris has been touring in support of her fantastic album October Valentine.  This Friday at Portland's beautiful Alberta Rose Theatre we'll be kicking off a great night of Northwest music in a co-bill with Eugene's favorite dance/party band The Sugar Beets

Hi friends,

If you sit around and think long enough about how satisfying it is to play at the Alberta Street Pub, it will happen.  Alas, if only the sitting around part were true!  But the rest is:Strangled Darlings and the Pub here in Portland invited Nicolas Miranda and I to join them for some genre-bending, string-based shenanegans and hijinks this coming Saturday.  Low cover, hi-flying fun.  Duck!  Nicolas and I start things off at 9:30.

The following following Friday I want to introduce you to a new friend of mine, Nicole Berke.  Nicole and I teach together at Sound Roots and in a talented pool, she is hands-down one of the most talentedest.  Her effortlessly soulful voice and rich piano playing will kick off the evening, followed by the wide-open electric fusion of Lincoln Crockett's SPB, the newly rechristened foursome behind my album Play In The Yard.  We're gonna let it all hang out.

More dates - including some fun things people have been asking for - and news to come in 2011.  Looking forward to playing for you.

Bloom Out Inside Saturday!! + More News!! - May 31, 2011

Hi Everyone,

This Saturday, June 4, I'm going to let you in on a little secret - I have a new band: Bloom Out Inside.  Nicolas Miranda on guitar, Jason Mellow on bass, Peter Schwimmer on banjo and I have developed high-level psychic 'chamber stringband' chemistry and our own genre: Prograzz.

After Bloom Out Inside's first performance back in December booking agent Daniel Eichler called us "The best thing I've seen since the Hardly Strictly Bluegrass Festival."  We're heading into the studio later in June to make a one-of-a-kind album due out later this year.  This will be our 3rd public performance, the first since March and we want you to be a part of it.  Tell your friends.  We're growing something special.  Come see what blooms.
